For the digital video animations used in humanLocomotion_la, individual figures were digitally 'captured' from movies whose plot location was Los Angeles. These figures were chosen because the actions they were making on screen were filmed as a full body shots. The figures were then cut out from their filmic backgrounds which were replaced with solid colors in order to focus upon the specific movements of each actor. The digital video animations investigate these movements in isolation much as Muybridge did in his sequential photographs from the late 1800's (early precursors to modern film). The dvds also contain extended sequences of computer manipulated material which use line and solid colors to further animate the figures. Each of the 31 monitors in the installation contain its own unique character. A 32nd monitor plays a medley of vertical animations. The animation loops vary from four to six minutes and play on consumer dvd players which are mounted on the wall with the lcd monitors.
